"Make Group" is very handy in subtracting figures, since Geometry in SketchUp is sticky, which means if you move one edge or face to another, they will stick together. For example, I want to make holes on a rectangular prism, one way of doing it is to intersect the prism with another figure. However, this will not work out without firstly make both shapes as a group. Once it's done, right click to bring up the menu and choose "intersect with model" then explore groups and delete the unnecessary lines or faces, mission accomplished...XD
